EXPEDITIONS
At 1.4 million km², the Labrador Peninsula is one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet. In 2018 I set a goal to cross its width by canoe. From the Labrador Sea to Hudson Bay it was an estimated 1700 kilometre journey that would last 83 days. With only my dog Saku, I would travel, up and down remote rivers, across enormous lakes, and over portages that were littered with both beauty and danger. We would witness and camp in wilderness that few, if any, have ever seen and rewind back to a time when life was simpler.
I embark on a challenging 10-day, 200km remote wilderness expedition to retrieve the canoe I abandoned at freeze-up in Northern Quebec in 2018. There is a chance that Bears or the harsh northern elements got the best of it…did it survive? Come along to find out. It’s an adventure of the rarest kind far from civilization!
Join me and my dog Saku for episode #1 of our 68 day wilderness camping adventure. We travel 700 km’s across the challenging woods of Newfoundland. It’s survival in every sense of the word other than the fact that we live primarily on carried rations. We do catch many fish for extra calories later in the trip. We are often many miles from civilization.
My expeditions are journeys of endurance, discovery, and the deep connection between human and nature. Each adventure tests my limits and brings me closer to the wild landscapes I call home. Join me as I document these treks through videos and stories, capturing the raw beauty, challenges, and incredible experiences found only in the remote corners of Canada.
In April 2017, Justin Barbour and his Cape Shore water dog, Saku, set out from Robinsons on a 700-kilometer trek across Newfoundland’s rugged wilderness. Facing late winter’s grip, they journeyed through the Long Range Mountains and into the island’s interior, navigating lakes and rivers by inflatable raft. From sunrise to sunset, they battled unforgiving elements in their quest to reach Cape Broyle. Complete with color photos, maps, and fascinating details, Man and Dog offers readers a front-row seat to outdoor life and Newfoundland’s natural beauty—a journey for explorers and nature lovers alike.
Join Saku, a bold Cape Shore water dog, and his human, Justin Barbour, on a 700-kilometer trek across Newfoundland. Facing icy lakes, dense forests, and rushing rivers, they journey from Robinsons to Cape Broyle on a mission of courage and friendship. Along the way, Saku and Justin meet new friends, share updates with loved ones, and discover Newfoundland’s rugged beauty.
